Places I love to eat, shop and stay when visiting one of my favourite cities in the world! Of course not exhaustive, but a really nice mix of the things I love.

TOKYO

TO STAY: K5 Tokyo

TO EAT: Merci Bake
Perhaps my most favourite little cake shop in Tokyo. French-themed and super cute. They often have new items but you can always rely on the richest chocolate cake, a layered banana one to be in the cabinet. Just a few tables inside and they often sell out.

Merci Bake – 3 Chome-17-10 Wakabayashi, Setagaya City, Tokyo 154-0023

The Aoyama store, Higashiya Man specialise in Manjū. I always bring their beautifully packaged sweets back to Australia as gifts.

LUNCH SPOTS

TO EAT: Tempura Abe Honten
A small lift, right on the street in Ginza will take you down to Abe Tempura Honten. One of Tokyo’s famed foods is tempura-don and here is a good place to enjoy it at lunch. It’s awarded a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand which is awarded to restaurants serving high quality food with good value for money. You can have tempura cooked to order too, but the dons are such good value for money so we always get those.

TO EAT: Sue Zen
This small eatery does traditional set lunch which includes a protein (the mackerel is always wonderful), rice, miso, pickles and depending on your choice, tamogoyaki (Japanese rolled omelette).

Directly next door to Sue Zen is a small outdoor cafe which specialises in Kakigori – shaved ice. On a hot day, there'll be lines out the door. They use seasonal syrups and my favourite is the one with sweetened condensed milk.

Sue Zen – 20-8 Sarugakucho, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0033

TO EAT: Brown Rice Canteen
All vegetarian! Great set lunches and lovely peaceful setting.

TO EAT: Life Son
A nice spot for lunch if you feel like Italian with a Japanese twist! A really great place to come if you have kids as there is an outdoor area with shade and plants. The interiors are relaxed and feels a little like a cafeteria which I loved. The neighbourhood is great to explore too.

WINE BARS (WITH FOOD)

TO EAT (+ DRINK): Ahiru Store
Very small wine bar serving natural wines, mostly French, and really delicious food. We got there just before opening time and the line was already 15 deep. We were lucky to squeeze in on the very last table, standing only, and enjoyed some really good food and wine.

Ahiru Store - 1 Chome-19-4 Tomigaya, 渋谷区 Shibuya City, Tokyo 151-0063, Japan

TO EAT (+ DRINK): La Pioche
We didn’t make it here, but almost EVERYONE recommended La Pioche for natural wine and bistro-style eats!

La pioche - 1 Chome-18-1 Nihonbashikakigaracho, Chuo City, Tokyo 103-0014

A LITTLE MORE SUBSTANTIAL

TO EAT: Yakitori Toriyoshi
Incredible Yakitori. No bookings and a few different locations. The original is Nakameguro and my favourite.

Toriyoshi - 〒153-0051 Tokyo, Meguro City, Kamimeguro, 2 Chome−8−6 谷島ビル 1F

TO EAT: Eatrip
The loveliest restaurant in a beautiful setting in one of the busiest parts of Tokyo. A focus on fresh, organic and seasonal Japanese produce. The menu is ever- changing, depending on produce availability which they receive from local farmers.

Eatrip – 6 Chome-31-10 Jingumae, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0001

TO EAT: Hachigo Ramen
Perhaps my favourite ramen in Tokyo! Light but complex and Michelin Starred as of this year! Only 6 seats and a ticketed system so get there early as they tend to run out of soup by the afternoon. Pretty wonderful experience!

Hachigo Ramen - 3 Chome-14-2 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0061, Japan

TO EAT: Sushi Ginza Onodera
Sushi Ginza Onodera is well-known in Tokyo and is at the upper level, in terms of price. We were recommended to head to another branch of theirs where the sushi chefs train before they move into the main branch. Same quality of fish just made by the apprentices. Our chef had already been making sushi for over five years and it was seriously incredible. All for a fraction of the price. Very fun vibe, lots of sake and interaction with the chefs. Standing only.

TO EAT: Kirimugiya Jinroku
Great Udon place, also awarded a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand for high quality and good value. Usually a line so try and turn up at opening time to grab a spot, otherwise, it moves pretty fast. One of our favourite spots!

TO EAT: The Blind Donkey
After closing one of favourites BEARD, Chef Shin Harakawa has now partnered with Chez Panisse alumni Jerome Waag to create a new restaurant called Blind Donkey which is currently operating out of the former Beard space. While I haven't eaten there in this new form, the meal I had at Beard was so special and a truly wonderful experience. Very thoughtful and interesting food, prepared simply. It's now casual French and has an ever-changing menu depending on seasonality and availability.

TO EAT: Udon Shin
Reallllly popular udon spot! Expect to wait quite a long time for a table. It is really good though, so if you have the time and patience, it’s worth it I think. Super chewy and bouncy noodles and great tempura!

SHOPPING

TO EAT: Bloom and Branch
A super lovely clothing store which also has some ceramics at the front of the store. It’s where I always pick up beautiful objects. A little cafe there too, by COBI coffee where in the warmer months they make really lovely Kakigori (shaved ice).
